I’ve been on a brief hiatus. Last fall I took over as
department chair, and I’ve been busy figuring out my new duties, at least one
of which is to figure out how to sleep during meetings without calling
attention to myself (hint—it’s easy; that’s what everyone is doing).
Anyway, I’ll be back with more posts soon, but I wanted to
get something quick out to share the good news—my book, That Hidden Road,
just won the San Diego Book Award in the “Unpublished Memoir” category. I was
selected as a finalist earlier in the spring, but I didn’t want to say anything
until they selected the winners (a complete list of which can be found here).
Parts of That Hidden Road have appeared on this blog,
and I’ve been fortunate to publish a couple of stand-alone chapters (in
slightly different form) in the journals Midwestern Gothic and the Georgetown
Review. My job now is to get the whole thing published. There have been
some close calls (stories in themselves), but no go. Maybe now luck is on my side…
